History

The store that would become Diplomat Pharmacy of Flint, Michigan originally opened as Ideal pharmacy in 1973 as the fourth store in a small chain owned by Dale Hagerman and several others. Just before Dale’s son Phil graduated from college in 1975, Dale traded his stock in from the small chain to buy the store from Ideal and Diplomat was launched on the tenet of, “Take good care of the patients and the rest will fall into place.”

Phil Hagerman joined the family business in 1975 and in 1991 he became president of the pharmacy. In 2004, Jeff Rowe and Steve Chaffee partnered with Phil to expand the business and today Diplomat is a tightly formed company run by a veteran executive team. Diplomat is recognized by the MPA, and others as a national innovator.

Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy’s future lies in continuing to develop and offer unique services to our patients on both local and national levels. We will continue to grow by following our Mission Statement: “We are dedicated to being a customer focused and innovative partner, providing medication management and clinical services in a caring, cost-effective, supportive environment; keeping patients healthier…longer, one patient at a time.”

More about the history of Diplomat’s Flint location

Services such as compounding, cholesterol screening, one-on-one patient counseling and community-based wellness programs facilitated Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy to move to a new building in 1997. The new location allowed Diplomat to expand its compounding services and to include a certified clean room and sterile and infusion products. The new location also included a separate area for specialty pharmaceuticals and medication management services. Starting with dialysis patients, Diplomat designed a medication management and delivery program that has developed to be the nation’s largest and most complete program. Following this success, services for additional chronic conditions were added, including HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, Transplant, Fertility, Oncology, Arthritis, and more. With new compliance and educational programs under development, we continue to expand our services by finding unique ways to improve patient care.

Dovetailing with the compounding and medication management services is the one on one patient consulting and education services offered through Diplomat Flint’s Wellness Center. From private consultations with our Pharmacist/Clinical Nutritionist on Bio Identical Hormones, to in home training for injection technique from our nurse educator, we seek out and meet the individual needs of our patients. Our Pharmacists and health educators lecture regularly on a variety of topics including CKD, Diabetes, Nutrition, Asthma Management and more. Our patient care and marketing teams work with Physicians, Case Managers, and state and local agencies to identify and serve patients with special needs.
