Stelara™ Is Approved by FDA for Moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis
Stelara™ (ustekinumab), manufactured by Centocor Ortho Biotech, was approved by the FDA for the treatment of adult patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Stelara™ is an interleukin-12 andinterleukin-23 antagonist and the first drug in its class on the market.
In clinical trials, at least 65% to 75% of patients achieved a reduction in the Psoriasis Area and SeverityIndex (PASI) – 75 score compared to only 4% of patients on placebo.
Stelara™ is administered once every 12 weeks by subcutaneous injection and must be administered bya healthcare professional. As with tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, Stelara™ may increase the riskof infections, including tuberculosis, and may increase the risk of malignancies. The FDA is requiring aRisk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) for Stelara™ that includes communication with healthcare providers and a medication guide for patients.
