Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy Receives Business of Science and Technology Award from CORP! Magazine

26 April 10

Flint Twp., Mich. (April 26, 2010) – Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy, the nation’s largest privately-held specialty pharmacy servicing the needs of patients and physicians nationwide, was a recipient of the Business of Science and Technology Award from CORP! Magazine, a state-wide publication focused on Michigan business. Honorees in business and higher education were spotlighted for leading the way in science and technology through innovation, research and applied science. The awards were presented on April 20th at the Michigan State Management Center in Troy. Corp! Magazine also recognized the Business of Science & Technology winners in its March/April 2010 print issue.

Coincidentally, the award was presented on the same day Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy announced it had received an 18-year Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) tax credit from the state of Michigan for $61.5 million, $14 million in Career Alliance, Inc. workforce training funds, and additional planned incentives from the City of Flint that will allow the company to focus its immediate expansion efforts in Flint at the Great Lakes Technology Centre.

Specialty pharmacy refers to a branch of the pharmaceutical delivery system that focuses on comprehensive and coordinated systems of pharmacological care for patients with serious and chronic illnesses and complex medical conditions. Diplomat offers its services through contracts with prescription benefit managers and health plans, and through direct relationships with physicians and patients. The Company also provides services to large retail pharmacies not equipped to handle the specialty pharmacy needs of patients requiring highly specialized drugs.

Diplomat’s employee base, currently more than 400 company-wide, with approximately 350 employees in Michigan, is expected to add over 1000 new jobs in life sciences in five years and 4,000 by 2028.

“Specialty pharmacy is a nearly $100 billion industry and a true growth area for Michigan,” explained Diplomat CEO and co-founder Phil Hagerman in a recent statement. “Three of the top 10 drugs we provide today didn’t exist five years ago. There are hundreds of drugs in the specialty pharmacy pipeline and it is a likely scenario that half of the top 10 drugs we will provide in five years are not on the market today.”
